As most of us know, cooling towers are utilized in industrial air conditioning systems, normally in big factories and other establishments that utilize so much heat and power and require being cooled down. A cooling tower does exactly as its name suggests – cooling – it cools warm water from the chiller condenser system. The tower is often found at the final stage of the heat transfer procedure since, after the cooling tower, the excess heat is later transferred into the atmosphere.
There are at least two designs of these towers, that is, counter-flow and cross-flow design. Let’s look at them below.
Counter Flow Towers
The first type of cooling towers is the counter flow. The water is allowed to spread out as it follows the same pattern as we will see with the case of the cross flow towers. The towers are more funnel-shaped and there’s only one fan at the center of the tower and a rotating water pipe distributor fitted below the fan. The pipes of the water distributor shoot water from one side and the action rotates the distributor.
Cross Flower Towers
The second type of cooling towers is the cross flower. The flow of the water is designed to be at a pretty specific angle to the flow of the air to work and the angle is the right angle. A cooling tower that utilizes flow technology will be box-shaped and it works by pumping the warm water to the top of the tower, where it’s then distributed to the sides of the tower and dropped through small holes there. Then, plastic air intake louvers, which can be seen at the side of the tower, let the water spread out while dropping, and following this air is then sucked from the outside into the cooling tower by many fans. Once the air comes into contact with the dropping water, it’s then cooled and falls to the bottom of the tower.
The cooled water is then pumped out again and circulated through the chiller. From there, the excess heat from the chiller is taken to the water again and the warm water is again transferred to the tower top, meaning that the cycle starts again.
Conclusion
The uses of cooling towers are obviously to cool water. If you wish to know more about these towers and or require buying one, you can learn more information online.
